Building the Data Biosphere

Federal agencies NHGRI and NHLBI have awarded UC Santa Cruz significant support for the AnVIL and BioData Catalyst, projects that are part of the new Data Biosphere initiative, focusing on moving computational work closer to cloud data. This model surpasses the slower, traditional model of download, then compute. It also promotes reproducible science by leveraging software modularity.

By providing access to data and tools in a secure environment that can scale to meet the computational needs of researchers, UCSC is helping to spearhead Data Biosphere technology, eliminating logistical concerns and allowing researchers to focus on biological problems.
